From Feedback to Action: BEQI Feedback & Nudge Study in Mombasa, Kenya

In Mombasa, Kenya, ECD Measure partnered with local organizations to conduct a randomized control trial to test whether practical, low-cost feedback could help preprimary teachers improve classroom quality. Following a classroom observation using the Brief Early Childhood Quality Inventory (BEQI) tool, selected preprimary teachers received individualized feedback on their teaching practices, along with weekly WhatsApp nudges—and for some, peer cluster meetings. Over 12 weeks, teachers in the intervention groups increased their use of evidence-based practices like encouraging pretend play, offering free choice play time, and inviting children to share ideas. Results showed large improvements, especially when WhatsApp nudges were combined with in-person support. The approach proved practical, scalable, and highly valued by teachers.
