Together for Early Childhood Evidence convened a panel at the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES) Conference to share country-level plans for research in Malawi, Rwanda, Liberia, and South Africa to advance goals for data-driven early childhood systems.

Each T4ECE country team is at a different stage and the workshop offered an excellent opportunity for teams to learn about best practices and examples of how others have approached early childhood data and measurement issues. For example, participants learned about the recently completed T4ECE early childhood research activities in Liberia, Rwanda, and South Africa.

The goal of the workshop was to bring together people who gather and use early childhood data in their countries to discuss how we can collectively move towards more data-informed early childhood care and education (ECCE) systems in Africa. Over the course of the two-day workshop, participants had the opportunity to work within and across country teams to learn about country examples of early childhood data generation and use, identify where their countries are on the path of developing a data-driven ECCE system, and develop common country visions for moving forward.

Presentation on quality in public and private early childhood care and education settings, including responses to: What are characteristics of children attending public vs. private ECCE? How do teacher qualifications vary by private and public settings? How is parent cost associated with observed quality? Do families get what they pay for?

This project aims to identify and code, analyze and describe existing social emotional learning (SEL) and psychosocial support (PSS) measurement/assessment tools and guidance documents being used in the international Education in Emergencies (EiE) sector.

Presentation on MELQO addressing the following questions: Describing Environments: What’s it like to be in pre-primary in various countries? Universal vs. Local: How do children’s developmental trajectories vary or look the same in various parts of the world?

The study assesses pre-primary children to gather preliminary evidence on learning and development and explore whether Fursa kwa Watoto (FkW) leads to improved student outcomes among pre-primary students.

The Consortium for Pre-Primary Data and Measurement in Africa held a kick-off meeting at CIES in San Francisco, convened by ECD Measure Group, is building a global consortium on data and measurement in early childhood, driven by the experiences of five taskforce countries in sub-Saharan Africa (Ethiopia, Liberia, Rwanda, Senegal, and South Africa).
